Saint Cupcake another great Portland stop

by Karen on November 2, 2011

While still in Portland I managed to get by Saint Cupcake. Since I’ve eaten so many cupcakes on this leg of my trip I was overjoyed to see that they had other treats.  Always a bonus.  Parking was a pain like you would imagine downtown Portland Oregon to be.   But hey it’s a bigish city and to be expected.  Nice roomy shop [...]

Cupcake Jones

by Karen on October 28, 2011

Ah yes another wonderful day in Portland Oregon.  Hasn’t rained once since I arrived.   And it’s time for cupcakes   Now this is just a small shop and they really just carry cupcakes.  The offering of flavors is not that huge but don’t let that detour you. The cupcakes here are filled with cremes and fruit filling.  That [...]

Surprise Cupcakes, have you heard about them?  Would you believe Larry’s serves about 50 different flavors everyday!  Yikes don’t want to be the baker at this shop.  Most but not all of the cupcakes have a hefty filling.  Some are kind’a crazy like green slime or the hot chili pepper.  I hade the Dutch Apple Pie [...]

What does it take to run an amazing cupcake shop?  The boys from The Republic of Cake can tell you.  The shop is located in Orinda, California just over the Bay Bridge outside San Francisco.   I’ve had their cupcakes and they are tantalizing.  The shop is not pink and you won’t find any fluff.   It’s down to [...]

Porto’s Bakery Los Angeles

by Karen on August 18, 2011

Porto is not a new bakery by any means yet it is one of the biggest I’ve been to so far.  They opened in 1960 and now have three locations.  I’m kind’a partial to small mom and pop bakeries probably because I owned one.  So when my sister in-law suggested we go here I wasn’t [...]

Yikes this store is filled with merchandise.  It was like no other store I have visited.   Both mother and daughter were in the shop working. Sondra and Allyson Ames.  I was lucky that upon a moments notice they agreed to talk with me.  Some people might find all the “cupcake stuff”  off-putting but I didn’t.  It was tastefully [...]

Crushcakes Santa Barbara

by Karen on August 14, 2011

Perfect location just off the downtown congestion in Santa Barbara.  Not only do they have cupcakes but a nice little cafe is attached with indoor and outdoor seating. Plenty of flavors to choose from.  They also make pull-apart cakes which you don’t see cupcake shops make all that much.  I picked Coconut,  Peanut Butter Chocolate, and  [...]

Cupcakes Squared with Robin Ross

by Karen on August 12, 2011

Can you believe it?  Square cupcakes!!!  Robin Ross the genius behind Cupcakes Squared was a graphic designer before she got into the cupcake business. Now that doesn’t surprise me.   She opened the doors April 2008 in a family orientated area of San Diego.  One of my regular customers moved to San Diego and found this shop.  [...]

Cupcake Camp Santa Barbara

by Karen on July 26, 2011

The poster for this event was created by Jessie Oleson at Cakespy. Not sure on the exact head count, must have been close to 800 people. The cupcake girls were there in force.  Cupcakes for Cancer was started by 14 year old Blakely Colvin.  They raised thousands of dollars this year. There was even a beauty queen [...]
