So here’s the crazy thing. We were having brunch at Cafe Henri on our way to Four and Twenty Blackbirds pies shop when we stumbled on this shop in Long Island City Queens,, NY . I’m with my New York friends from way back and they happen to be escorting me to all the hip eateries in the area. How perfect that I happen to see a sign that says, “Chimney Cakes”.
If I see a sign that has the word cake in it, I’m always interested! But when we saw the chimney part I wasn’t sure what it was. A Chimney Sweep company perhaps? Everyone was game to go look which meant this little side step was getting better by the minute.
What is a Chimney Cake?
Well the dough is made from scratch, hand rolled onto a wooden pin, coated with sugar and baked in a special oven then rolled into different toppings. Some of the flavors are walnuts, coconut, almond, cinnamon, chocolate, and ginger. The dough was like a raised doughnut but it had just a hint of lemon zest. Very light with a slightly crispy outer caramelized sugar crust. An authentic traditional dessert from Transylvania, honest! Could have demolished a dozen of these
At some point I want to try to duplicate this technique.
When you are in a food mecca like New York these are the amazing treasures you can find.

What an interesting find, Karen. Wish you had posted this a few weeks ago – we just got back from a trip to NY. I’ll put it on my list for the next trip.
Oh sorry would have been a good one!
How neat are those chimney cakes. If you do make some, please post about them.
