The Secret to Semi-Homemade Vanilla extract for holiday gifts

by Karen on December 5, 2011

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST VANILLA!

The most amazing gift you can give this holiday season to all your baker friends.  Don’t forgot to keep one for yourself.  Honestly you should be blending this for your own pantry.  Usually I make everything from scratch but somethimes it’s just not worth it, this is one of those times!   Making this one correction to store-bought vanilla can make all the difference in the world.

It’s simple and long-lasting.  The hardest part will be choosing what bottle to use.   I found great bottles at the Container Store.  Vanilla beans can be costly but look at Indri Vanilla, they are a fair-trade small business.  They have Bourbon Java beans at a low-cost.  My good friend Kitty has just told me that Trader Joe’s has them as well.   You can also find them at specialty food shops.  Mix the different types on beans for that special blend.

I buy cheap vanilla at Costco and …………………………………………………………..now you have to watch this quickie video to get the rest.  You won’t believe just how easy it is.

Hi KT,
I needed a vanilla bean for a Thanksgiving recipe. The supermarket had them at “1/2 price” for about $6.50 (yes, it was over $13.00 for one vanilla bean). Thought I was getting a deal but then stopped at Trader Joe’s for a last minute something and they’re everyday price was aroung $3.50. Thanks for the tip and I can’t wait to try it. Hope all is good!
