Cakespy Jessie Oleson Interview and Book Giveaway!!!!

by Karen on September 29, 2011

Jessie Oleson at her shop

Yahtzee!!!!  Landed a video interview with the head spy Jessie Oleson down at the Cakespy Shop on my way through Seattle.  She is a quirky little pixie sporting a t-shirt with a unicorn on the front.  Her glasses have gold encrusted cupcakes on the sides.  Oh yes and don’t forget to add a splash of comic wit.  Creative and unique, she is bubbling over with talent.  I could listen to her for hours, and that’s exactly what I did.

New Book

You probably already know she has a new book coming out next month.  If you keep reading you’ll find out how to win a copy and some other groovy goodies.  I saw a first edition copy of the book in her shop.  It truly showcases her many talents, writing, illustrating, and baking, so you don’t want to miss this one.  The bakery book signing  tour.

Frosting Bake Shop Mill Valley

When I started in the cupcake business 4 years ago Jessie designed my sweet little logo for the shop!  I also carried her greeting cards in  both stores.  The Cakespy retail shop has all types of trinkets perfect for any dessert hipster.

This is her small corner in the shop where she tries to work on her illustrations.  Frankly I don’t see how she gets anything done because fans and customers come in the store constantly from all over the country.

Fun Fact:  Did you know she is known for painting murals on bakery bathroom walls!

Wanta get to know the real Jessie Oleson?   Watch this………………………………………………

Did you know Jessie’s mom is also an illustrator?  Yep and there was always plenty of drawing and art projects as a kid.

These are some of the blogs that she likes to reads:

Joy the Baker

David Levowitz

Dorie Greenspan

Serious Eats

Culinary Concoctions by Peabody

Cupcakes take the cake

Bake it in a cake

If she had a day off what would she be doing?  Pretty much the same thing she is already doing just not documenting every step.

Is there a part of her life she’d like to do over?  Not really.  She feels that every path she has taken has led her to where she is now.  It’s been a long and winding road but a good one. No regrets or short cuts needed.

I asked if she ever gets overwhelmed with all the hats that she wears?  You bet she does, all the time.  However she takes it in stride mostly, sometimes a tear or two is shed but it’s done with a smile.

After talking with Jessie I don’t think she has a rigid defined path for the future. She’ll certainly keep up with what she is doing now but also let life unfold organically.   I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more books to come.

My one word summation about my afternoon with Jessie Oleson- INTOXICATING!

I adore Jessie. She is so fun! I got to meet her in June and I love that she is so down to earth and nice. She shared her cupcakes with me in June. I’m so excited for her book and so jealous you got to visit her shop!

I find that to be an absolutely unanswerable question. Jessie Oleson, CakeSpy, is absolutely my idol. Though, I do not have quite the drawing talent she impresses her fans with, I do find that my passion for delicious things is quite similar. I have guest posted on the CakeSpy site a couple of times now, and each time she posts an article of mine..well…I can’t stop screaming with joy.
If narrowing it down, though almost impossible, I would have to say her openness and willingness to help others. No, I don’t mean charities and such like that, I mean those (like me) who also want a successful career combining the baking and writing world. The publicity for my writing and recipes she has given me has been phenomenal. She lifts the world up with sweet happiness!

Her life is an adventure revolving around treats and sweets…you just gotta love that! Plus, her recipes on Serious Eats are too fun.

Jessie is RAD. One of the things I love the most about Jessie is her ability to make unconventional things magical. One of my favorite things is when she takes her chalk with her on her walk to her shop. I can’t wait to see what she has done t make something ordinary into something awesome.
