When I first heard about this shop I thought it sounded ridiculous! But I was definitely going to stop by and check it out for myself. These days having good tasting cupcakes just isn’t enough.
This store looks like it came straight out of the Willy Wonka movie.
They don’t sell anything other than cupcakes but they could. The shop is in the big outdoor mall downtown Santa Barbara. The parking can be tricky but just be patient. I got a spot just across the street.
When you walk in it’s magical, immediately you feel all warm and fuzzy. The tables have candy inset under the glass tops. Giant oversized lollipops hang from the ceiling.
There are plenty of helpers to serve you and explain “The Frostinator”. At the counter you can order ready-made cupcakes. Probably over a dozen flavors to choose from. All the ones you would expect but some different ones too. I try to get one of the standards at every shop I visit and then something different. Generally that standard is vanilla for me. If you can master that the rest are probably pretty good.
I picked the ”Pretty Please”. This is a hi-hat style and it’s a hard cupcake to make. I don’t really like cherries but I couldn’t resist. Moist red velvet cake with cherry buttercream frosting dipped in chocolate ganache and a cherry on top, works for me.
Frost your own:
If you are sitting down we can continue……………………….You get to pick from any of the cupcake flavors and the cake is warm, yep I said warm. Well right there at the warm part you got me. Here was my standard, vanilla. Wait ……….no it wasn’t any vanilla it was the crazy rainbow vanilla “Rainbow Brite”, oh yeah. When I saw that I thought this is going to be good. I had to add soft serve ice cream just ‘cause I could. Then there it was, The Frostinator.
Ok it looks sort’a like a soft serve dispenser but not. They only offer white vanilla buttercream which is just fine for me. It came out fast and it wasn’t pretty. Being the expert I am, I had planned to do a beautiful swirl to showoff a little. Oops maybe next time. I would imagine if you did it a couple of times you could get it to do what you wanted. I added gummy bears and chocolate rocks, two of my favs. It was then weighted. For the bucket of cake with frosting, ice cream, and the high hat it was $8.50.
Not at all expensive for what I got. Still a little skeptical but excited I took a bite……………………. one of the most moist vanilla cupcakes I’ve ever had. I was shocked at how good it tasted. So not only was it colorful it had good flavor!!!!! The frosting was not too sweet. What a brilliant idea, wish I had thought of it……………………..
The shop opened in November 2010. If you don’t get down there you are nuts or you live to far away. Absolutely do not go to Santa Barbara without going here!
What a pleasant surpriseJ
Remember eat something sweet everyday!
